Five (5) Year Apprenticeship 

As a steamfitters apprentice you will learn to lay out, install, and maintain all systems performed by steamfitters.  You will also be trained in all methods of joining pipe including welding, soldering, brazing, screwed pipe and multiple types of mechanical joints.  In addition you will become certified in rigging, hand signaling, med gas installation and brazing, OSHA, CPR and First Aid.


Basic Qualifications 


You must:

          Be at least 18 years of age by the time you start work

          Have a high school diploma or G.E.D

          Be physically capable of performing the work of the trade

          Be proficient in math


Work will be both indoors and outdoors.  A large portion of work will be performed in uncompleted structures.


As an apprentice your beginning wage rate will be 49% of journeyman scale.  You will receive incremental annual increases reaching 80% of journeyman scale as a fifth year apprentice.  After satisfactorily completing your apprenticeship you will become a journeyman steamfitter.


Apprentices are required to attend day classes once every other week for 8.5 hours per day.  The school year runs continually.  You will also be required to attend some evening and Saturday classes.


You will be required to provide your own transportation to and from work and school.


Good punctuality and attendance to both work and school are a must.    


Work Summary 


Installation and maintenance of the following systems:


          Hot water

          Chilled water




          All types of fuel systems including natural gas, propane and fuel oil

          Temperature control systems



          Med Gas






Applications are taken the first two full weeks of March at Nebraska Workforce Development
