Five (5) year apprenticeship


The sheet metal worker fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs sheet metal parts and equipment.  May also work with specialty sheet metal works for kitchens, etc., roofing, flashings and guttering.


Basic Qualifications:

At least 18 years of age

High school education or a G.E.D.

Physically fit to perform work of the trade

Above average math and mechanical skills

Dependable, ability to get along well in team atmosphere

Familiarity with construction is helpful 


Needs to furnish own hand tools

Works with power hand tools


Work will be both outdoors and indoors, with a large portion of work probably being performed overhead.  Much work should be indoors.


The apprentice will receive increment wage rate increases based on a percentage of the journeyworker rate, beginning at approximately 45% of journeyworker pay with a 5% increase each six (6) months.


The apprentice will be required to attend related training classes, most likely in the evenings.


Condensed Work Experience:

Architectural Sheet Metal - brass and copper ornamentation, columns, skylights, signs and metal ceilings, and downspouts

Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning - design, fabricate and install

Testing, Adjusting and Balancing - fine tuning and maintaining HVAC components

Use of computers - to fabricate sheet metal products and troubleshoot HVAC systems

Health, Safety and Environmental training

Food and Beverage - Stainless Steel fabrication and installation in restaurants, cafeterias, etc.

Welding - fusing different types of metal using the latest technological processes

Service work - installing, maintaining and repair of equipment that conditions air

Siding and decking - rigging and installation of building components relating to floors and walls

Pattern Development - development of patterns for objects to be constructed.
